Lama temple - Statue of Buddha Maitreya

Lama temple - Statue of Buddha Maitreya

In the hall of the kings of Heaven, the statue of "laughing Buddha" or "Maitreya big belly" (or Buddha of the Future) is flanked with two stupas holding 500 Buddhas each.
The statue was carved in wood and then gilded.
The portly and debonair Milefo monk, who religious name is Qici, lived during the 10th century and talked a lot about Bodhisattva Maitreya. At his death, many people thought he was the incarnation of Maitreya and so he is thus often used to represent this Bodhisattva. His big belly and his smile bring happiness and thriving.
Note 1 : these ear lobes are very large, which is a sign of exceptional people in buddhism...
Note 2 : there is another representation of Maitreya in the Pavilion of the 10,000 joys.
At the rear, it seems to be tangkas ? (Tibetan painting on silk or banners).
