The synagogue seen from the courtyard. It was built in 1927.
Shanghai has hosted many refugees from the Russian Jewish community in the 1930s. Then during the Second World War, many stateless people have settled in Shanghai after the intervention of the Japanese vice-consul Shibota (later named "Righteous Among the Nations") that gave them the opportunity to stay in the city without fearing of deportation .
