Manbulsa temple - Zoom in on the statue of reclining Buddha

Note the elephants. The elephant has an important place in Buddhism as it is the first animal to come and pay last tribute to Buddha. Hence its representation here. Moreover, Buddha would have calmed down a furious elephant thrown against him by an enemy. And another story says that he was helped by two animals during his fasting : a monkey reportedly offered him honey and an elephant offered him bamboo sticks. In the book of Brahma, the Buddha is represented by an elephant with 6 tusks.
