James Connolly was an Irish revolutionary and one of the main instigators of the 1916 Easter Uprising in Dublin, while the whole Ireland
was under British rule. After taking control of
landmark buildings in the capital, he proclaimed with Patrick Pearse the establishment of a provisional government of the Irish Republic.
But after 6 days of fighting, the insurgents laid down their arms to spare the civilian population. James Connolly with most of the insurgent leaders was
sentenced to death and shot.
