Beijing 2008

Beijing 2008

Historically, the first transcription of the name of the Chinese capital in the Roman alphabet was done by a Jesuit in the early 17th century, which gave the name "Pékin". This term is still used more or less wrong in french-speaking countries in particular. Since the passing of pinyin system in the 1950' to transcribe Mandarin in the Roman alphabet (in China, there are many dialects. When we speak of "Chinese" it is actually Mandarin) the name of the capital is Beijing.
The Beijing Olympic Games, the games of all records, began on 08/08/2008 at 8am 8m 8s (the figure 8 is a symbol of happiness in China).
