Haeinsa temple - Mokugyo

The mokugyo (in Japanese, or moktak in Korean, mùyú in Chinese...), also called wooden fish, is used to beat time during the recitation of the sutras (sacred scriptures). It may have wooden carvings or not... In Buddhism, the fish, which never sleeps, symbolizes wakefulness.
